Introduction and Features
Taunton is Somerset’s county town, set in a beautiful area of South West England. It stands on the River Tone and all around are areas of outstanding beauty.
The Blackdown and Quantock Hills, The Somerset Levels, together with the Brendon Hills and Exmoor are not far away. The North Somerset coast is easily accessible while the South Coast can be reached in about an hour.
Taunton is steeped in history, but today it is a vibrant place to live with all the facilities of a forward looking town, often referred to as the gateway to the South West. It has good transport links, with the M5 passing just outside the town giving access to Devon and Cornwall in the south and to Bristol and London in the north. There is a main line railway station and a bus station providing both local and national services. Bristol international airport is about 45 minutes drive to the north and Exeter airport about the same distance to the south.
The town has a good mix of shops at its centre, along with a library, museum, sports facilities and health centres, including the main regional hospital. A short distance away are supermarkets, a multiplex cinema and even a bowling alley.
Several well known schools and colleges are based in Taunton with ample opportunity for further education provided by Somerset College of Arts & Technology.
